Coimbra was also the center of all philosophical and scientific thought of medieval Portugal. This was the place where they were educated doctors of science and church, and the most prominent figures of Portugal being one of the most famous of the Catholic Church and of the "Portuguese World", the Franciscan friar Saint Anthony of Padua (Santo António de Pádua).
